Pagotto given cocaine ban Friday 14 September, 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Former Sampdoria, Milan and Italy Under-21 international goalkeeper Angelo Pagotto has been banned for eight years after testing positive for cocaine twice.
The shot-stopper had already been suspended for failing an anti-doping test for cocaine and resumed his career, but was caught out again after Crotone’s match with Spezia on April 28.
As this was his second strike, the prosecutor had asked for a lifetime ban – such as the one handed down to ex-Brescia and Udinese midfielder Jonathan Bachini – but the FIGC opted for eight years.
As he will turn 34 in November, it is safe to say Pagotto’s playing career is over, but he could still train to be a Coach.
A Napoli youth product, Pagotto had his first major playing experience at Pistoiese in 1994-95, then moved to Sampdoria and was the first choice goalkeeper for the 1996 European Championship winning Under-21 side.
He struggled to make his mark at Milan, then went on to terms with Empoli, Reggiana, Perugia, Triestina, Arezzo, Torino, Grosseto and Crotone. |
