Quagliarella's Samp gesture Saturday 8 December, 2007
Fabio Quagliarella insists he won’t celebrate if he scores against his former club Sampdoria on Sunday.
The striker had said he wanted to remain at Samp when his co-ownership deal went to a blind auction – when both clubs bid in a sealed envelope and the highest figure wins the entirety of his contract – but Udinese pipped them to the post.
“If I score, then I won’t celebrate. I have such wonderful memories of Sampdoria,” commented Quagliarella. “Having said that, I hope I do score…”
The start of his Udinese career has been shaky, but it seems the Neapolitan has finally settled in with three goals in as many games.
“I am hitting form now and hope to keep up my physical fitness, as that is what leads to goals. Sampdoria have a very strong attack force and can easily finish in the top spots, so this will be a tough play-off.”
He has made a name for himself by scoring spectacular goals and is on the outskirts of Roberto Donadoni’s plans for Euro 2008.
However, he does face competition for a place in the Azzurri squad from current Blucerchiati hero Antonio Cassano.
“He is extraordinary, but all I can do with regards to the Nazionale is watch my own progress.”
