Italian Under-21 boss Pierluigi Casiraghi has named his squad for their opening Euro 2009 qualifier with Albania.

The youngsters will begin their campaign in Pontedera on June 1 in a group which also consists of Croatia, Greece, Azerbaijan and the Faroe Islands.

The 2009 Finals will be hosted by Sweden, who qualify automatically, while the 10 group winners and four best second-placed sides will qualify for the play-offs set for October 2008.

Casiraghi therefore has to start a new cycle with players born after January 1, 1986 and will meet the squad on Tuesday for a three-day training camp.

Parma and Juventus are the most represented clubs with three players each, followed by Treviso with two.

The Azzurrini have also qualified for the final phase of this year’s tournament, which will take place from June 10 to June 23 in the Netherlands.

Casiraghi has named a preliminary squad of 30 players, which will be cut to 23 by May 30.

Italy play their first match on June 11 against Serbia and will then play England and the Czech Republic on June 14 and 17.

Azzurrini Euro squad revealed

Pierluigi Casiraghi has named his Italy squad for the Under-21 European Championship this summer.

The tactician had chosen a preliminary squad of 30 names earlier this month, but has today whittled that list down to 23.

There are few surprises with Roma’s Alberto Aquilani making the squad after a season disrupted by injury, while Giuseppe Rossi’s goals to keep Parma in the top-flight have been recognised too.

Arsenal owned striker Arturo Lupoli, who will join Fiorentina next month, has missed out though.

The Finals will be held in Holland from June 10 to 23 and five-time champions Italy will face England, Serbia and the Czech Republic in Group B.

The Azzurrini, who will meet up at Coverciano on June 1, are scheduled to play their first match against Serbia on June 11 and will then play England and the Czech Republic on June 14 and 17.

The winners and runners-up in each of the two groups will play each other in the semi-finals. The Final will take place on June 23 at Groningen’s Euroborg Stadium.

Pierluigi Casiraghi’s new Under-21 side got off to a glittering start to their Euro 2009 qualifying campaign, crushing Albania 4-0.
The Azzurrini began their two-year era while the ‘old’ squad is still preparing for the European Under-21 Championships in Holland later this month.

The first goal for the next generation was netted by Treviso’s Robert Acquafresca, who got the final touch to Daniele Dessena’s cut-back from six yards.

Casiraghi fielded an all-attack 4-3-3 system at Pontedera’s Stadio Ettore Manucci with Giuseppe Rossi and Juventus starlet Sebastian Giovinco supporting Acquafresca.

Bianconeri midfielder Claudio Marchisio suffered an injury during that opening goal move and was replaced by Gabriele Paonessa.

There were two desperate goalline clearances from the Albanians, but they could not stop a splendid strike from Dessena.

Udinese’s Marco Motta burst down the right flank from Giovinco’s pass until Dessena flicked the ball up with his left foot to smash home the volley with his right.

Genoa defender Domenico Criscito has made a name for himself in Serie B and will return to Juventus next season. He sealed the 3-0 going into half-time with a fortunate angled drive that squirmed under the body of the Albanian goalkeeper.

Xhevair Sukaj’s shot off target was really the visitors’ only attempt in a first half that was utterly dominated by the Italians.

Giovinco shone in his role supporting the centre-forward and brought a tough save out of Samir Ujkani straight after the restart, as well as firing just over and setting up several good chances.

The fourth goal arrived eight minutes from time and once again Juve jewel Giovinco was involved. His assist sparked a classic counter-attack for Fiorentina’s new signing Arturo Lupoli.

Only in the final moments did Albania go anywhere close to troubling Andrea Consigli with a Gilman Lika free kick and deflected effort from the same player.

Italy’s new Under-21 era is in safe hands, smiles Pierluigi Casiraghi, with Sebastian Giovinco, Arturo Lupoli and Giuseppe Rossi shining bright against Albania.

The Azzurrini began their qualifying for the 2009 European Championships with a comfortable 4-0 victory in Pontedera, starting the new two-year campaign.


“We had a great start and created so many chances in the opening 20 minutes,” noted the Coach.


“It was an excellent first half and perhaps we let our foot off the gas a little after the break, but that was understandable at this stage of the season. It is never easy to make a debut.”


The first and last goals were netted by new boys Robert Acquafresca of Treviso and Fiorentina’s new signing from Arsenal and Derby County, Lupoli.


“We have players of such talent upfront that there really is an abundance of riches. Now we have to make sure they grow well within their clubs. I hope they improve even more, because both the Under-21 side and Italian football need them.”


Juventus youth team hero Giovinco was particularly impressive this evening, setting up Lupoli’s goal and playing a part in every attacking move.


As for Casiraghi, he must now turn to the ‘old’ Azzurrini to prepare for the European Under-21 Championships to be held in Holland from June 10.


“It will certainly be an exciting adventure, even if it is difficult,” he said of the group phase against England, Serbia and the Czech Republic.


“Now we will look to recover some of the injured players and hope to be ready and fired up for our first match on June 11.”


Italy open their account by facing Serbia in Nijmegen.

Italy’s Under-21 European Championship campaign has got off to the worst possible start following a 1-0 defeat to Serbia. Kicking off the tournament in Nijmegen as one of the favourites, some poor finishing saw the Azzurrini pay the ultimate penalty after conceding just after the hour mark. It’s a long way to the semi-finals from here…

Gigi Casiraghi opted for his standard 4-1-4-1 formation as his side started their Holland 2007 adventure. Antonio Nocerino was asked to defend the back four, leaving Riccardo Montolivo and Alberto Aquilani to create in the middle. Fiorentina ace Giampaolo Pazzini was fielded as the lone striker, with the support of Raffaele Palladino and Alessandro Rosina.

Despite naming such an attacking line-up, the Azzurrini had great respect for a Serbia side which included the odd gem. Bosko Jankovic is a player to be watched as the 23-year-old has scored nine Liga goals for Mallorca this term. Babovic and Krasic are also highly-rated by European scouts, even if the latter lasted for just 32 minutes because of injury.

A confident Serbia started well against a slightly cautious Italian outfit, even if the latter were unlucky not to be given the chance to take the lead on seven minutes. Pazzini found himself with just the ‘keeper to beat but was stopped by an offside flag which should probably not have been lifted.

The Viola hitman wasn’t denied by the officials soon after but by his own finishing. Having been served an assist by Aquilani from the right, the Atalanta youth team product fired wide from a central position inside the penalty area.

It wasn’t all one-way traffic though as Serbia caused a scare in the 15th minute. A Jankovic drive looked to have beat Curci even if it also just whizzed past the wrong side of the post. It was a let off for the young Roman ‘keeper who was soon to be replaced by Brescia’s Emiliano Viviano because of a probable groin problem.

That was a blow for Italy but the five-time European champions ended the opening period strongly with some decent efforts. Montolivo was the next man to try his luck from distance which forced Kahriman into a save.

Although Italy allowed Serbia control of the ball for large periods, the peninsula boys were becoming increasingly dangerous on the break. It was that ploy which led to their best effort of the first period, in minute 31, when Pazzini failed to put his side 1-0 up from a decent position inside the box.

Italy’s wasteful finishing continued just before the interval. This time it was Palladino who was the culprit as the Juventus ace fired his angled drive two metres past Kahriman’s left-hand post – even if the ‘keeper also got the slightest of touches to the ball.

There were no changes at the break even if things did seem to alter on the pitch as it was Serbia who looked far more dangerous at the restart.

Smiljanic and first half substitute Tosic tested the reactions of Viviano before the young custodian was beaten in some style in minute 63. It was Dejan Milovanovic – a survivor from the 2004 Final defeat to Italy – who rippled the net from 25 yards with a low drive after the ball fell to him via a Giorgio Chiellini tackle. It was virtually Serbia’s first serious effort at goal!

Italy wasted no time in going forward looking for an equaliser as Aquilani headed over the bar, before Italy wasted an indirect free-kick in the area as Montolivo fired his shot into the wall. However, Serbia threatened to make it 2-0 as Viviano kept out Milovanovic while Zoran Tosic headed against the outside of the post from the resulting corner.

With time running out, Casiraghi threw on Giuseppe Rossi. His goals kept Parma in the top flight last season, could he now save his Azzurrini side from defeat? Seemingly not alone as the Coach then went for broke by bringing on Graziano Pelle’ in the 82nd minute. Both changes made little difference as Serbia held on for a 1-0 win – also thanks to a slack Pazzini header in injury time which sailed over the bar.

Italy will now play England on Thursday in a game that they really need to win. Serbia will go up against the Czech Republic on the same evening after their 0-0 draw with the English earlier tonight.

Kahriman 6.5 - Splendido nel finale di primo tempo su Palladino, non e` sicurissimo in un paio di circostanze e si affida ai pugni. Nella ripresa concede agli azzurri un calcio a due in area, ma non deve piu` parare. Ci pensano gli azzurri a sbagliare le conclusioni.
Ivanovic 7 - E’ il capitano della Serbia, ma contro Pazzini e Palladino anche la sua esperienza e` un`arma a volte inefficace. Fa bene il fuorigioco nella prima frazione di gara. Stoico nel finale.
Kolarov 6.5 - Da’ sicurezza al reparto difensivo confermandosi uno dei piu` esperti nella sua squadra. Di lui si ricorda anche un calcio di punizione (sbilenco), nel primo tempo. La Lazio e` interessata a lui. Da rivedere su altri palcoscenici.
D. Tosic 6 - Grande spinta sulla fascia per tutto il primo tempo; cala vistosamente nel prosieguo del match, ma si rende pericoloso nel finale, quando colpisce un palo esterno di testa
Babovic 6 - Si da` un gran da fare in mezzo al campo: la sua azione e` spesso eccessivamente fallosa, ma non si fa mai prendere d’infilata dagli avversari.

Jankovic 7 - E’ il giocatore di maggior qualita` della sua squadra e si vede: quando la palla passa per i suoi piedi l’azione si accende. Le punizioni sono materia sua: pericoloso in una circostanza, meno bene poi.
Krasic 6.5 - Molto volenteroso, si fa notare per un paio di scorribande offensive dalle parti di Raggi. E` costretto abbandonare il campo per guai muscolari
Milovanovic 7 - Il numero 10 e` sulle sue spalle non per caso: ha il merito del gol, un po` casuale, ma non solo. Riesce, con i compagni di reparto a imbrigliare i centrocampisti azzurri.
Rukavina 6 - Grandi scorribande sulla fascia, e` un po’ impreciso in fase di assistenza. Tutto sommato una buona prova.
Smiljanic 6 - Infoltisce il centrocampo. La sua prova dimostra un gran carattere e una grande sostanza, segno che i timori del pronostico erano fondati. Anche la Serbia ha delle ottime individualita`.
Mrdja 5.5 - Gioca da solo davanti, ha un`opportunita` nel primo tempo. Impalpabile, ma per una larga parte nel match sembra che i compagni l`abbiano dimenticato. Finisce con la lingua fuori dai denti.
Rakic s.v. - Pochi scampoli la`a davanti. Il tempo per sfiorare la rete in un`occasione.
Z. Tosic 7 - Prende il posto di Krasic infortunato. Il suo ingresso regala piu` profondita` alla sua squadra: non a caso le migliori occasioni della ripresa arrivano dalla sua parte. Nel finale sfiora il 2-0 in due circostanze, ma e` impreciso nelle conclusioni.

Curci 6 - La sua gara dura solo 22`: una parata su Mrdja fa riacutizare i suoi problemi all`inguine. Lascia il posto a Viviano.
Viviano 6 - Entra a match in corso e non e` mai facile: sul gol ha poche responsabilita`, il tiro di Milovanovic e` troppo angolato. Bravo poi a evitare il 2-0 sulla punizione battuta dallo stesso Milovanovic.
Chiellini 5.5 - Grande cuore, ma e` da un suo intervento non preciso che scaturisce il gol, seppur fortunoso, della Serbia. Nel finale prova a dare una mano davanti con una proiezione offensiva che per poco non e` premiata con il gol.
Raggi 6 - Prova di grande sostanza per il potente difensore dell`Empoli. Fatica contro Krasic nella prima frazione, ma poi si assesta e non disdegna proiezione in attacco.
Andreolli 6 - Non sfigura nella retroguardia azzurra schierata da Casiraghi. Mantiene la posizione senza eccedere in sganciamenti offensivi. Non e` dalla sua parte che arrivano i pericoli maggiori.
Mantovani 6 - Sicuro dietro, prova la conclusione di testa a fine primo tempo. Nella ripresa tiene bene, anche quando, con la Serbia gia` sull`1-0, gli avvesari spuntavano da tutte le parti per colpire in contropiede
Rosina 5 - `Rosinaldo` delude nel primo tempo: nella ripresa cerca di farsi carico della rimonta azzurra eccedendo spesso in protagonismi inutili. Cerca l`azione palla al piede, ma la difesa serba era impenetrabile anche per un `trottolino` come lui.
Montolivo 5 - Delude un po’ le aspettative: si attendeva qualcosa di piu` da un giocatore delle sue qualita`. Ha la possibilita` di incidere, partendo dietro l`unica punta Pazzini: ma cosi` come gli altri compagni di reparto fatica a trovare spazio e a lavorare `di fioretto`. Andra` meglio la prossima.
Nocerino 6.5 - Ha vita difficile contro folto centrocampo serbo: e` praticamente il solo a fare la fase difensiva, anche se ha dimostrato di non essere solo un incontrista. Se la cava bene, la condizione fisica e` ottimale e si vede. Non gli si poteva chiedere di piu`.
Aquilani 5.5 - Gioca finalmente una competizione importante in maglia azzurra dopo tanti infortuni. Delude un po` come gli altri centrocampisti di qualita` schierati da Casiraghi.
Pelle` s.v. - Casiraghi lo lancia nei minuti finali contando sulla sua stazza. La mossa pero` non sortisce gli effetti voluti.
Palladino 5 - Degli azzurri e` quello che piu` di tutti si deve rammaricare per le occasioni perdute: ne ha due nitide tra i piedi, una nel primo, una nel secondo tempo. Non riesce a finalizzarle, in parte per demerito suo, ma anche per il poco spazio concessogli dagli avversari. Ma da uno con la sua classe e` lecito attendersi qualcosa di piu`.
Pazzini 5,5 - Lotta, isolato, contro Ivanovic e compagni: non ha molte occasioni per fare valere le sue qualita` atletiche. Solo nel finale gli capita sulla testa la palla per il possibile 1-1: purtoppo il rimpallo non lo premia.
Rossi G. s.v. - Ha 15 minuti a disposizione, ma quando entra in campo la difesa avversaria ha gia` eretto un muro invalicabile. Poteva essere utilizzato un po` prima.

意大利遭遇冷门 不敌塞尔维亚

在英格兰队比赛结束后，在荷兰厄美根市进行了B组的第二场比赛。意大利青年队排出4141的最强阵容。开赛不久意大利前锋帕齐尼获得一个单刀，但裁判判罚他越位在先，慢镜头显示此球有误判嫌疑。第20分钟塞尔维亚队获得破门良机，但扬科维奇的射门没有穿越库尔奇的防守。

随后蒙托利沃远射被门将得到。第31分钟，帕齐尼在小禁区内获得绝好的射门机会，但他的射门却再度被门将得到。频繁浪费机会的意大利队以0比0暂时结束上半场。

下半场第63分钟，塞尔维亚队斯米扬维奇带球长驱直入后被意大利后卫基耶利尼放倒，裁判判罚点球，米洛瓦诺维奇操刀命中。值得一提的是，这是塞尔维亚队全场唯一一次射中球门。

Alessandro Rosina and Alberto Aquilani presented a united front as they talked up Italy's chances of claiming a sixth UEFA European Under-21 Championship to complete a unique treble for the country.

Italian football was in despair this time last year, reeling from the outcome of a sporting fraud trial that implicated five top clubs in wrong-doing. Twelve months on and the rebuilding process continues apace. The Azzurri's FIFA World Cup triumph was an immediate fillip and with AC Milan claiming the UEFA Champions League last month, the U21s could complete a unique treble with success in the Netherlands. "Despite Serie A experiencing a crisis, Italian football has remained at the summit of world football," said Rosina. "The World Cup and Milan's Champions League victory reflect this and we hope to further underline it by winning the European Under-21 Championship."

The 23-year-old played a key role in Torino FC's successful fight with relegation and speaks with experience when he underlines the necessity to make a good start in Group B, where they will face Serbia, England and the Czech Republic. "We play three matches in a very short space of time so it is crucial to start the tournament on the right foot," said the playmaker. "These are all very tough teams but we are Italy so they will certainly fear us. We need to go into games with the right balance between concentration and determination."

It is a sentiment echoed by team-mate Aquilani, who said: "We have a very good squad, with individual quality and the necessary skills to do well. We just need to prove it on the pitch." Unlike Rosina, the 23-year-old AS Roma midfielder did not take part in last summer's finals after suffering a knee ligament injury on the eve of the tournament in Portugal, and he is hoping to lay down an early marker when the Azzurrini face Serbia in Nijmegen on Monday. "The first match is always important," he continued. "But we're calm, because we're aware of our strengths. Anyway, wearing la Maglia Azzurra (blue shirt) is a stimulation in itself."

Italy bravely came back from two down to rescue a point against England – but their Under-21 European Championship campaign hangs in the balance! The Italians went into the Arnhem clash knowing that only a victory would really do, but the pre-tournament favourites were held to a 2-2 draw. Now Italy need to beat the Czech Republic on Sunday and hope for the best…

Despite losing their opening match 1-0 to Serbia on Monday, boss Gigi Casiraghi kept faith with the same starting XI – even if goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano was given the gloves due to the injury sustained by Gianluca Curci.

Things didn’t start well for Casiraghi’s babies and although Riccardo Montolivo tried his luck after just two minutes, the peninsula boys looked unrecognisable in the opening half hour where it seemed as if they were playing themselves out of the competition.

There is no doubt that this Italian side is full of technically gifted youngsters, but there was little evidence of that in the early stages. Italy struggled to keep hold of the ball and there was a lack of cohesion between defence and midfield.

England dominated the early exchanges and only a fine Viviano save kept out a Taylor header on 10 minutes. But the Italian net-minder was in for an uncomfortable night and Leroy Lita should have scored twice for England in the space of a minute.

The striker incredibly failed to give his side the lead when he rounded the ‘keeper but fired wide, before he took advantage of a Viviano clanger only to strike the bar from close range. However, an England goal wasn’t that far away…

Stuart Pearce’s boys went one up in minute 24 when David Nugent headed in from close range – and things went from bad to worse for Italy when England scored again within 120 seconds. This time an Ashley Young cross was slotted home by Lita.

Facing an early exit, the Italian youngsters finally awoke to end the period strongly and amazingly still in the game. Alberto Aquilani worried the English with a wonderful free-kick that sailed just over, before Italy made it 2-1. Giorgio Chiellini managed to scramble the ball home after a touch from Raffaele Palladino.

That goal came in minute 36 and minute 37 saw Italy almost level things up. Giampaolo Pazzini, who netted a hat-trick in this year’s 3-3 friendly at Wembley, brought the best out of goalkeeper Scott Carson.

Clearly unhappy with what he was watching, Casiraghi brought on Marco Motta – for the struggling Andrea Raggi – and Giuseppe Rossi during the interval. The latter settled into the game instantly and he had three efforts on goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half as the Azzurrini went in search of an equaliser.

England were looking pretty comfortable at the back, though, especially as Italy’s questionable finishing continued. Pazzini had already wasted a great opportunity in injury time of the Serbia defeat and he again failed with his head on the hour mark, when the Fiorentina youngster headed over from a favourable position.

Alessandro Rosina and Nigel Reo-Coker then exchanged efforts before Italy’s pressure finally paid off as they made it 2-2 in the 69th minute. Aquilani, thanks to a Rosina assist, was the Italian celebrating after his strike from distance saw the ball settle in the bottom left corner.

Possession was almost exclusively with the Azzurri young guns and their movement was good as Rosina went desperately close to making it 3-2, even if Young – England’s most dangerous man in the second period – then almost did the same at the other end within 60 seconds.

The game was now on a knife-edge as Italy knew that a draw was still not a great result for them – despite being two down at one stage. Firmly being in the driving seat, they went on looking for a third and it was Antonio Nocerino who went within inches of giving his side the lead in minute 85.

Rossi had the last effort of the night for Casiraghi's youngsters but it wasn’t enough. Italy must now defeat the Czech Republic at the weekend and hope that England don’t do the same against Serbia, who are already through to the last four, at the same time.

Carson 6.5 - Non puo` nulla sul gol, un po` fortunoso di Chiellini, mentre e` coperto sul tiro dalla distanza di Aquilani che vale il 2-2. Autore di alcuni ottimi interventi, salva il risultato in piu` di un`occasione, con riflessi felini.
Baines 6.5 - Autore del perfetto cross in occasione del primo gol inglese, mette spesso in difficolta` Raggi con avanzate pericolose.
Hoyte 5.5 - Costretto a giocare molto arretrato, non ha molte opportunita` per mettersi in mostra.
Onuoha 6 - Autore di un primo tempo molto efficace, controlla bene Pazzini anche nella ripresa.

Milner 5.5 - Si vede soprattutto nel primo tempo; suo il cross che attraversa tutta l`area piccola dell`Italia mettendo i brividi alla difesa azzurra.
Nugent 6 - Sblocca il risultato con un bel colpo di testa, ma e` la sua unica vera occasione da rete del match. Si eclissa totalmente nella ripresa.
Lita 7 - Realizza un gol, ma ne sbaglia almeno altri tre. Colpisce una traversa piena, non riesce a insaccare a porta vuota, ma e` sicuramente il piu` pericoloso tra gli inglesi e uno dei pochi della sua squadra a non tirare i remi in barca nel secondo tempo.
Young 6.5 - Insieme a Lita impensierisce la difesa azzurra con la sua fenomenale velocita`. Giocatore da seguire con attenzione.

Viviano 6.5 - Ancora incerto nelle uscite, e` comunque autore di alcuni ottimi interventi che risulteranno decisivi al termine della gara.

Chiellini 6.5 - Realizza un gol fortunoso, su un rimpallo, ma la sua prestazione e` positiva soprattutto per le avanzate che tengono su tutta la squadra.
Raggi 5.5 - Sulla destra e` spesso in inferiorita` numerica dalle avanzate di Baines e Young.
Criscito 6 - In campo per mezz`ora, ma non ha molte occasioni per mettersi in mostra.
Andreolli 6 - Primo tempo da dimenticare, seconda frazione gestita con maggiore sicurezza.

Nocerino 6 - Garantisce il giusto filtro a centrocampo. Nel finale va anche vicinissimo al gol.
Palladino 5.5 - Ha sprazzi di buon gioco, ma e` molto decentrato e non riesce a esprimersi al meglio.
Pazzini 6 - Ha diverse palle-gol, ma non riesce a sfruttarle anche per via di una soffocante marcatura. Gli inglesi si ricordano ancora della sua straordinaria tripletta a Wembley e non gli lasciano un centimetro di campo libero.
Rossi G. 7 - Tante occasioni da rete, e` sempre molto pericoloso, ma non trova la via del gol per pochissimo. Merita un posto da titolare.
