070622 意大利国奥 U21欧青赛 0:0葡萄牙 点球4:3获胜
U-21 European Championships, Olympic play-off, 21/06/07 | | | Italy 0-0 Portugal (4-3 on pens) | | Nijmegen, Holland |
Italy have qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games after beating Portugal 4-3 on penalties in their European Championship play-off tie. Despite being reduced to 10-men following the dismissal of Giuseppe Rossi, the Azzurrini defended a 0-0 scoreline to take the clash to spot-kicks which eventually led to victory.
Having failed miserably in their attempts to actually win the European Championships, both Italy and Portugal didn’t want to go home empty handed. England’s progression to the last four meant that there was still a spot in next year’s Olympics up for grabs and it was a case of in or out in Nijmegen.
Italy boss Pierluigi Casiraghi made no changes to the side which comfortably beat the Czech Republic 3-1 on Sunday night. Giorgio Chiellini was again fielded as a centre-back, while Rossi started up front in support of Giampaolo Pazzini.
The opening period was a pretty even affair with both sides giving little away. As a result, it was no surprise that almost all of the most dangerous efforts on goal came from distance.
Alberto Aquilani was looking good for the Azzurrini again and he worried Portugal in minute eight before going even closer in the 33rd. His 25-yard shot had enough power to beat Ribeiro even if it just finished wide.
But Italian ‘keeper Emiliano Viviano was no spectator in the first half. Vaz Te and Nani tried to test him with decent efforts, before Varela went desperately close in the 32nd minute. His left-footed shot from the edge of the area beat the Brescia ‘keeper only to sneak past the wrong side of the post.
However, the best effort prior to the interval belonged to the Azzurrini. The chance fell to Pazzini, after some fine dribbling work by Rossi, but his effort was straight at Ribeiro before a Portuguese defender cleared the loose ball off the line.
Casiraghi made no changes at the break but did make a number of adjustments once the game restarted. Pazzini and Alessandro Rosina, arguably two of Italy’s biggest disappointments during Holland 2007, were replaced by Graziano Pelle and Raffaele Palladino.
Italy’s attacking intent was clear but the side were struggling to break down an organised and technically gifted Portuguese outfit. Montolivo carved himself an opportunity in the 50th minute but was denied by Ribeiro, before Motta’s 63rd minute free-kick sailed wide.
It was proving to be another frustrating evening for Italy and their Olympic dream took an unwanted twist in the 74th minute when Rossi was dismissed. The Manchester United starlet was booked, for the second time during the game, after arguing with the referee over a foul. Casiraghi subsequently pushed Palladino to the left flank as Italy reverted to a 4-4-1.
Despite that setback, Italy went for goal via an Aquilani header, a Palladino rocket from distance and a Chiellini effort. Portugal responded with an Antunes cross-shot, which Viviano dealt with competently, and an off-target Nani hit before Pelle was denied by the Portugal No 1 with virtually the last kick of the 90 minutes. It went to extra time.
Being a man up, Portugal passed the ball intelligently but Italy’s fighting spirit was underlined by Chiellini. The Juventus stopper received a nasty cut to his head, but made some fine tackles in a period again characterised by long-range efforts – the most dangerous from Veloso in the 98th minute and Fernandes at the end of the first 15-minute block.
Montolivo was unlucky to see his shot from the edge of the box take a deflection wide, at the start of the second period of extra time, before Italy were let off. A Nani cross found Moutinho at the back post but he incredibly headed the ball wide – even if it took an unseen deflection off the back of Domenico Criscito’s head.
There was another scary moment soon after when Marco Andreolli gifted Portugal a chance. The ball was heading towards Viviano before the Inter stopper handed it to Djalo who failed to hit the target with just the ‘keeper to beat. The game went to penalties.
Italy were spot on when it came to the shoot out as Pelle’ [with the cheekiest chip penalty], Montolivo, Criscito and Palladino all scored. Viviano saved Fernandes’ effort and Antunes shot wide as Italy booked their ticket to China.
